I lived in Cuba for 10 years, though not in a rural environment. Still, many visitors (especially from our northern neighbours) assumed there was grinding poverty, violent crime, guns, drug problems and a disastrous economy (OK, they were right about the last).
They were shocked to find a British lady who chose to make Cuba home. My job as a tour guide was to educate them and show them around. By God, I enjoyed that.
I hear so much good about Colombia. When I travelled South America many years ago, it wasn't very safe to visit so I didn't. I really hope to make it them someday.
